Music Which Gets My Design Juices Flowing

When we are all working most of us will either prefer a quiet working environment free from distractions and loud noise, but in most cases I would think that we all prefer a type or set group of music which we can often find working to can be more productive. Personally when I’m working can often be found listening to either a play-list of music, my music library on shuffle or listening to a selection of podcasts. But these next few tracks are those from which I have often turned to in the past few months in times when I need to put my head down and drive myself through a pile of work to that deadline.

death cab for cutie Music Which Gets My Design Juices Flowing

This song was released by Death Cab for Cutie for the soundtrack to the hugely successful ‘Twilight’ series, the music video itself also features several scenes from the movie. The song is neither dominating or too quiet that you don’t feel it’s presence. The song builds from some meaningful lyrics in the first few verses to a powerful chorus that I find drives on my creativity.

“Meet me on your best behavior
Meet me at your worst
For there will be no stone unturned
Or bubble left to burst”

Although the chorus lyrically is telling us all that everything ends, it often is a great song to listen to when first beginning work to drive me on further into the morning/afternoon and evening. A brilliantly structured song, and I would also definitely recommend Death Cab for Cutie as an artist you could seek to discover more of.

Coming from the United Kingdom, we have recently have an influx of Canadian bands which have proved to go build themselves a successful fan base in the UK. I myself have found bands such as Alexisonfire and the Cancer Bats to be bands I really enjoy, another band from the maple leaf country is Moneen. A band i found through being on the same label as the proceeding two bands, after listening to various songs I found that I couldn’t stop myself from holding repeat on this particular song.

The song opens with a pulsing guitar riff, with only the lead singers vocals powering over the top. The song bursts into life only to be brought down a few notches again for the verse only to thrust into life in a most empowering of choruses.

“And you hold that sound
Just for you, you never let go
And you want what’s mine
A life worth living
And you watch the world
Watch it all crumbling down
But you hold that sound
Before you let go.”

The song really drives you through from start to beginning and doesn’t let you go as the song suggests, the bridge to the song allows you to hold your breathe for a few seconds. But the drums in this song and the whole tempo bring you work that extra effort in bringing out the best in your work. The song is taken from the album ‘The World I Want To Leave Behind,’ which is the bands fourth studio album.

The opening just makes you want to work straight away, its chanting bursts into life before “let’s go!” rings out and the song makes its entrance. I’ve always thought that the song could be used as entrance music at sporting events, but alas it always seem to be something vaguely pertaining to a teams nickname or an old 80s classic.

“It’s not easy making a name for yourself
Where do you draw the line?
I never thought id be in this far
Have fun some and never change that for anyone
Try not to miss me when I’m gone.”

The song is a lighter burst of the bands usual energy and can be found on their album “Homesick,” the song’s official video is a comedic affair and is definitely worth checking out with a few obscure cameos from friends of the band. I often find this album being listened to several times of a hard working week, each song has an edge and energy about it which I find myself tapping my feet towards, whilst my hand is either typing away or sketching up my latest concept.
