Who are Lady Umbrella?

LadyUmbrella was established towards the end of 2008 when a Spanish designer, Elena Montes Casado, joined forces with a dreaming entrepreneur, Robert Ryan and together they formed the company. The aspiration was simple – be our own bosses producing t-shirts that we would like to wear ourselves (well, one of us at least).

To get to this stage it has taken us over a year of designing, refining, crying and retrying but now we believe we have products that you’ll be just as excited about as us. To us, Lady Umbrella represents funny, quirky, unusual yet cool clothing. We have put a lot of effort into each design and when you order and receive the finished product you’ll know exactly what we are talking about…

Rob Ryan: The Man Behind Lady Umbrella

We managed to snag Rob for a quick Q&A to see what Lady Umbrella is all about and what role Rob undertakes on daily basis with this rising t-shirt company.

1. Hi Rob, thank you for taking a few moments out of your hectic schedule. Please introduce yourself to our Design Juices readers.

Design Juice readers my name is Rob Ryan and I am co-owner of LadyUmbrella, a ladies t-shirt company based in Dublin, Ireland. Sadly, I’m not the designer rather I’m the tweetaholic/spreadsheet guy…don’t hate me because of that though

2. We know you as the face of Lady Umbrella rob, but who else are behind the scenes? and what does a typical day at Lady Umbrella Towers undertake?

There are two of us involved, myself and the creative force that is Spanish designer Elena Montes Casado (hehe, we’d probably be more successful if she was the face of LadyUmbrella)..Typical days are few and far between as there is always something coming up. The one thing that is common between them all would be busting a hump to try progress the whole venture..As there are only 2 of us involved when we have ideas we tend to give them a whirl. There are no layers or red taped bureaucracy, if we have an idea we give it a go which leads to something new nearly every day which keeps things nice and interesting at the Towers hehe…

3. I know that the future has lots of great things in store, got any great surprises for the fans of Lady Umbrella?

I don’t know if we have any surprises for our fans as we like to keep them in the loop as much as possible. Those who read our blogs, facebook and site will have heard pretty much all of what is happening. We are planning on making some notebooks soon and decided which design to use with help from our fans..We do have pipe dreams for an umbrella sometime soon though if possible – it makes sense to have one I think hehe..

4. Is Social media and social networking an important part of the LU way of working?

I’ll be 100% honest and at this point in time I don’t think we’d have a “business” if not for social media. We started the venture with a shoe string budget and an abundance of hope and dreams and social media was the only viable route for “marketing” or promoting the brand. To date we’ve spent diddly squat on advertising and social media is what has enabled that. To say it is important would be an understatement..

5. Which people have you found to be the most helpfull in spreading the word of LU?

This is tricky question. I suppose those who buy and wear our t-shirts would have to be regarded as pretty important in the grand scheme of things…but, beyond those who actually buy and wear our clobber the connections which we have formed on twitter/facebook have been paramount to the spreading of the word of LadyUmbrella..To be honest we’re continually amazed at the amount of people who take the time to mention us in blog posts or to retweet our stuff and are most thankful..The way I see it we would be absolutely nothing if not for the support we receive from those who like our designs/us and tell their friends…

6. If you had a vacation and the LU brand was looked after what would you do with your time away to relax?

Sleep, drink, BBQ, repeat…some swimming as well perhaps or water sports..I don’t know. It has been so long now since I’ve really had a chance to switch off my social life has pretty much gone down the tubes..I’d probably still have to monitor whoever was looking after it, just to make sure our baby was being looked after hehe…

Wherever you want really hehe, if we’re not there and you want us to be there I will set up a presence there..but, places which we already have set up are…
