Xmas #WishList Interview: Featuring Angry Spade

Today on day one of the 12 Days of Christmas #WishList; We bring you an interview and showcase of the works of online t-shirt store Angry Spade. We recently got a chance to talk to the woman behind the brand, Jen and I discuss who Angry Spade are, what 2010 has been like for them? and What their #WishList for Christmas is in 2010.

Hi Jen, It’s great to introduce yourself to the Design Juices readers. Why don’t you tell us how Angry Spade came together and what you bring to the world of online t-shirts.

I could try to explain to you what Angry Spade is and how it started, but there really are no better words than the ones I originally wrote for our website:

Angry Spade Clothing Co. was founded in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania during January of 2010 by an aspiring t-shirt artist by the name of Jen Morgan; here is our story:

The name Angry Spade was brought about by Jen based on a superstition she has about the spade. To most it is nothing more than a suit in playing cards, but to her it holds good luck and can be a safety blanket to help protect against bad things in life. Not evil necessarily, but just day to day struggles that can easily make one unhappy.

Angry Spade as a clothing brand is about all of the different kinds of energy we come across in life, whether they be good or bad. We are also about trying to stay positive and believing in yourself through bad days, tough weeks or rough months, we all tend to forget even if it’s just for a few minutes. We’re about reminding yourself that it’s okay to have negative feelings sometimes, you’re human, we’re human, we’re all living breathing things that share in these emotions, but no matter how tough it may be, you should always find a way through these situations, because that’s all they really are: situations. Situations that you’ll get through, learn from and grow because of.

Angry Spade is here to bring out these feelings that we all dislike and sometimes fear to show everyone that there is always a good side, that silver lining. Everything has an opposite. The designs made here at Angry Spade are constructed around spades, mixing them into the themes of life and its many emotions. Think of each shirt as your very own wearable safety blanket.

Our shirts are made with good quality in mind and a great deal of time and thought goes into each and every one. Angry Spade strives to make each purchase an experience rather than just a transaction…and that is exactly what you will get.

How has angry spade grown in 2010? has this been a positive experience to own an online store in 2010? or have you like all of us felt the effects of the worldwide recession?

Angry Spade has most definitely grown a lot in 2010, considering that we started in January with nothing, we really had no where to go but up, haha. Certainly we have struggled a lot, and I’m sure most of it is due to the economy, but we haven’t let that hold us back. This recession has been rough, but it doesn’t make things impossible, the way I see it, if you work hard enough you will see results no matter what.

Have you had a single design which has outstripped success compared to your other designs? Do you have a favourite design personally? Why is this?

Originally our most popular design was Sketchy Spade, a lot of people loved the placement of the design on the shirt and the rib cage look to the spade. But more recently people have been eating up our new limited edition design titled Find The Key, which has been my favorite design so far. I think because it turned out exactly how I meant it to, and people really enjoy the idea and understand what its about. I love the expression on peoples faces when they themselves ‘find the key’ in the design.

Who in the online world of t-shirts have you sought for advice, opinions, help? Is the online t-shirt world good as a community to ask for advice and help?

Wow, there are so many brands out there who have helped us become a better brand. Off the top of my head there is Zombie Liquorice, Cure Apparel, 7th Ink, and Vicious History, all of them have given us advice and led us to where we are. I don‘t know if our fall line would have came off so well without them. And YES, the online t-shirt world is nothing BUT a community that helps each other and shares ideas.

There are some great forums dedicated to t-shirts, one of my favorites being TeeBanter.com. Of course there is Emptees but it’s so huge sometimes it’s hard to find what you’re looking for there. There are also a few great websites I recommend to anyone looking to start a clothing line, one of them being howtostartaclothingcompany.com . There is a TON of great info on that website.

Will Angry Spade being doing anything special for Christmas and New years?

Of course! We have something very special planned for this holiday season, we can’t give you too many details yet but we can tell you it will involve a pretty nice sale 😉

Complete this sentence: “All I want for Christmas is…”

All I want for Christmas is.. for you all to have a great holiday, and please remember that no matter if you have a huge family or no family at all, someone out there cares about you. And if at first you don’t see it, look harder. If you’re in a rut, or just having a bad time, don’t forget that everything has an opposite. Merry Christmas everyone!
