Today on day nine of the 12 Days of Christmas #WishList; We bring you an interview and showcase of the works of online t-shirt store Saucewear. We recently got a chance to talk to the woman behind the brand, Kelly and I discuss who Saucewear are, her work with the Tee Gazzette and What their #WishList for Christmas is in 2010.
Hi Kelly, It’s great to introduce yourself to the Design Juices readers. Why don’t you tell us how Saucewear came together and what you bring to the world of online t-shirts. Humble beginnings? or Do you have a rich backer?
Saucewear is a one woman show, no rich backer at all, but if you know one, please pass my name along to them, I’d be thrilled to have them spend their money investing in me!
Saucewear started as a dream a few years ago, a friend asked me to help him make some shirts for a project they were working on, and after the whole process was done, I realized how much fun I had. I thought….hmmmmm I could do this. So, that was it. I started the process of building my business. There is no “overnight success” story, in fact, most designers will tell you, it takes blood, sweat, and tears to be in this business.
What does Saucewear bring to the world of online shirts? Designs from someone who works hard in everything that she does, fun designs that people love, and a little bit of sauciness.
How are your designs created? Do you use traditional methods of hand sketching? or do you work with something like Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop? What is the process of idea on your mind to being printed?
I usually start a design out in my head….sometimes it will transition to pencil and paper, but mostly, I’ll just take to the computer and put the design together. The hardest part for me is coming up with new FRESH ideas. Putting the design together seems to be the easiest step for me. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, glue, popsicle sticks, feathers, doilies…you name it. However I can get the design to come together is how I make it happen.
We all should know Kelly from acclaimed t shirt site and blog ‘TeeGazette‘ How did this evolved? Who else works on this? How do you try and differentiate yourself from other T-shirt bloggers?
The Tee Gazette really was just a way for me to give back to the t-shirt design community. It really is filled with generous, selfless, and kind people. So many people have been there to help me from the beginning (GritFX T-Shirts and Rizzo Tees, just to name TWO), so I wanted to offer something to people coming up behind me. FREE exposure for t-shirt designers. A helping hand in getting the word out.
How do I set myself apart from other t-shirt bloggers? Well, I’m in the community, I’d like to think that gives me an upper hand. I go out of my way to FIND new brands and coax them to TTG, and I’ll do whatever I can to get the word out on YOUR brand…. just contact me!
It’s also a one woman show. That’s something I always wanted….was to do this myself. Maybe someday I’ll expand, but for now… it’s just me. Doing what I love. Supporting my peeps.
Will Kelly and Saucewear being doing anything special for Christmas and New years?
I think Kelly AND Saucewear will be pretty wiped out after this massive Xmas Giveaway, but besides that, I’ll be spending Christmas with friends and family, and probably heading up north to Maine with some friends for New Years Eve. Looking forward to it!
Complete this sentence: “All I want for Christmas is…”
All I want for Christmas is…. to be a rock star…. for just one night.
