Showcase of Designer Katie Brink
Today we hand over our pages to freelance designer Katie Brink from out of Rosemound, MN. Here we showcase her graphic designs and talk about her inspirations, education and design background. Without further delay here’s what Katie had to say about herself; I’m a graphic designer from Rosemount, MN. Currently I am freelancing with Rosemeier Designs, and looking for an internship in my field. I attended Minnesota State University of Moorhead to be in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program for graphic design.
While in college I was able to create many types of designs, but my favorite type of projects to work on were/are brand identity and logo design. I heard a designer once say, “I like design with a purpose. I’m not there to design for myself.” When I’m designing, I realize that I’m not designing for myself. In brand identity, I’m designing for a certain audience and purpose. Not to say that I never make art for myself. When designing for others gets monotonous, I keep the create juices flowing by working on illustration and painting.
While I create most of my illustrations for myself, I also love to use them in my designs whenever I get a chance. One of my favorite identity projects was Copa, a fake water bottling company with ties to the rain forest. It was my favorite because I was able to create the illustrations, and design my own type of water bottle.
When I’m drained and need inspiration, I look at art. If it’s just looking online at google’s artist of the day or going out to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, I can always find something that’s inspiring. If it’s in the way the artist used light in a photo or how they created meaning in a sculpture, it inspires me not only in that moment, but to be more dedicated to my craft. That’s why my plans for 2012 include finding an internship that will give me great design experience so I can go on to create design with a purpose.
