Today we share the work of a recent graduate a little different to the usual batch of graphic designers and illustrators, here we showcase the work of Jennie Whitham a Printed Textiles and Surface pattern designer.
I am a 2010 Graduate of Leeds Art College, based in the UK, with a 2.1 Degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design. I specialise in Illustration and Surface Pattern Designs, for the Greeting’s and Stationery industry. Since Graduating I have set up a small business under the name ‘JLW Illustrations’ and I have been accepted to have 2 designs published in a new design book, due for release January 2013, called Patternbase, I am also enrolled on the influential online course ‘The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design‘ created by Rachael Taylor and Beth Nicholls. I have completed 2/3 modules and since beginning the course I have opened several online stores selling my own designs on products. I am looking for freelance work, preferably for paper based products, or an ‘in-house’ position located within West Yorkshire.
With regards to my design style, I am heavily influenced by Geometric shapes and Florals, and often combine them together. I also appreciate the use of Colour, and often find my collections consists of vibrant colours and contrast with white/black. I predominantly work straight into AI but sometimes I find myself with a pen and sketchbook and hand-draw some of my initial motifs on paper and then manipulate and colour them digitally.
Some of my favourite designers include Rachael Taylor, Ian Dutton, and Caroline Gardner. I am instantly drawn to the colour palettes of these designers, their unique and quirky styles make them stand out from the crowd.
Currently I am working on expanding my online stores, to include more products available for sale in the run up to Christmas, as well as starting the design of a 2013 Calendar. I hope this time next year to be signed with a design agency and hopefully working full-time as a Surface Pattern Designer.
