Rachel Bennett is a University of Huddersfield graduate in Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors, specialising in printed textiles. Her work is a little different from the many illustrators and graphic designers we usually share with you all.
I studied at the University of Huddersfield, graduating with a high 2:1 Bachelor of Science Degree in Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors, specialising in printed textiles. I have since started up as a freelance designer producing patterns and illustrations for home and gift products, as well as taking commissions. Personal designs I produce are printed onto paper and fabric products such as notebooks, cards and tote bags with more fabric products currently being developed. These are sold through my Etsy shop as well as at craft fairs around the country and most recently, now being stocked locally in Silver Hammer Vintage Boutique in Liverpool.
My designs tend to be a combination of hand drawn techniques and computer based graphic elements. There is a lot of layering within my designs, motifs weaving over and under different textures, other simpler repeat patterns and scanned papers. I spend a lot of time experimenting with different mediums to generate drawings, paintings and textures, to scan in and create patterns and illustrations. I draw influences from a lot of different sources, I have masses of books, magazines and bookmarked websites that a use to trigger projects ideas.
Some of my favourite designers include Claire Coles, Timorous Beasties and Mini Moderns. The colour palette, unusual style and techniques of all three of these designers is what attracted me to their work.
Currently I am working on wallpaper and stationary commission as well as my own fabric collection to sit along side my most recent set of ‘Birthstone Crystals’ illustrations. I am also in the process of making fabric products with designs that are at the moment only available as paper products. I am always looking for commissions and licensing opportunities. Hopefully in the next year my business will be fully up and running and online shops full of lovely home and gift products.
