Printed Textiles Designer Kelly Denton

The day starts with a good strong Italian coffee in the studio with a biscuit surrounded by my vintage and contemporary trimmings collected over the last 12 years. Personal photography, I take nearly every day and any number of found or made items. As the sea air floats through the window and I begin to design new pictures I believe the fresh, carefree spirit which surrounds me flows into my creativity.

My commercial projects to date have included selling greeting cards to Selfridges London where the orders kept us up all night as there were 1000’s of handmade greeting cards to complete. Plus a series of prints and greeting cards Bags for All Occasions which sold throughout the UK in galleries, gift shops and online.

Outside my day job as eCommerce Manager for Tate, I have always had a creative outlet as I studied Art, Design and Media MA at Portsmouth University and Printed Textiles and Decoration BA at Middlesex University. The same course as the wonderful designer Ella Doran, whose work I greatly admire.

Recently, I started designing two ranges, the first Pretty Things is a collection based on collage designs of vintage and contemporary pieces offering a fresh twist to print. Pretty Pink House has proved popular and now I have started to develop a village including Rose Cottage in Winter, Sweet House, Garden Den and many more. Framed hand embellished and mounted prints are available on my Etsy Shop.

My second print collection Fairy Buzz – Faith Hope and Fairies began years ago while I doodled in a sketchbook I kept in my bag. I am now producing an uplifting range of prints which offer an update on the traditional Flower Fairies with a carefree, independent and soulful fairy spirit. As a believer in fairies, I know they come with different personalities, like, Geek Girl Fairy, Fairy Hearts Shopping and the original Fairy Buzz. This is a developing range and new prints and designs are being added all the time.

Along with my beautiful surroundings on the south coast, my inspiration comes from books I have on my studio shelves; like a very fond favourite, Sara Fanelli Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am and Sara Midda Southern France.

As my studio overlooks the garden, it allows me time for my mind to wonder and then hopefully the creative mist clears or failing that a walk on the beach come rain or shine with my two young sons definitely adds a new perspective.
