“My name is Laura Potter and i am a surface pattern designer who has just graduated with a First Class Honors degree in Textile Surface Design from Bolton University. I Have Exhibited at New Designers in June and have just completed a two week work placement with Graham and Brown Wallpaper Company, I have also worked on two commissions for wallpaper designs and a freelance job for a fashion design for a print on accessories and I am now looking for full time work, Freelance or commission opportunities.
My latest theme i worked on was called “The Beauty’s in the Detail” where i was inspired by nature, organic forms, flowers and insects. I created my designs into a couture dress and 8 scarves for my final degree show. I am fascinated by colours, textures and patterns created in nature, which i then enjoy manipulating into designs on Photoshop & Illustrator with layering techniques to develop intricate details which are not immediately obvious.”
“Vibrant colours and textures characterise my work, I particularly like drawing as i feel it is a natural way to express myself and allows me to create images in a way that i see them which others may not. Drawing from nature is my passion, visiting garden centers, aquariums, the zoo or even a walk through woodlands generates me with new exciting ideas for surface pattern designs. Throughout my work I have been influenced by the historical illustrations of Ernst Heackle and fashion prints by Hermione De Paula.
Studying for my degree has increased my passion for pattern and i now plan to develop my skills and gain as much experience as possible to achieve my dream job as a textile surface designer. Ideally gaining a job in a design studio for a few years to gain experience and contacts for the future where I would love to be as successful as surface design artists such as Cath Kidston and Rachael Taylor running my own business.”
