Artist & Illustrator TJ Lubrano is self-taught and is from a very cultured background, she dropped the life of HR and Sociology to draw for a living.
‘Have you ever kept a dream aside only to venture onto a path filled with security, but with this nagging feeling of being lost? I have. I’m an artist/illustrator now, but I used to be a Sociology student with a degree in Human Resources. Quite the change huh? Drawing and creating stories have always been a part of me though. And the way I draw and paint now, is inspired by all I experienced in life so far. Next to this, I write about my observations and share work in progress pieces. I like to take the world on this magical journey where all is possible.’
‘My art is often described as magical whimsy. I share a lot of magical creatures, like dragons, cute monsters and…cupcakes. I also have a huge love for the dramatic and more “simplified” pieces with black ink. In a way, having no art degree, made it easier for me to find my drawing voice. Why? I drew what I wanted and I didn’t let rules unfluence me. I drew what inspired me and what inspired me where Disney and Anime. I have a huge admiration for artists like, Hayao Miyazki and Glen Keane. The life and storytelling element that they can capture between their lines is just beyond amazing.
For the last 2-3 years, I’ve been very luckiy to get commissioned by people from around the world. Seriously. How cool is that? I can capture bits of people imagition and memories on paper with washes of watercolor and ink. Next to this, I’ve created headers and logos for other clients. I’m always working on personal projects for my portfolio as I eventually want to go into art licensing. My latest project (and my biggest to date!) is my very first children book with a writer from San Fransico. The story is called Lighting up the World and message it’s going to spread is: Do what you love and that makes you light up. In the end, you can light the world up with your own light. It’s exactly what I intend to do with my work and I hope I can brighten up other’s people worlds by doing so as well.’
