University of Gloucestershire Illustration Graduate Tom Graham

A graduate from the University of Gloucestershire in 2012, Tom Graham describes himself as an ‘illustrator, lover of comics and general doodling.’

‘Working with a mixture of traditional and digital media, my work is bright, colourful, and attempts to encapsulate a quirky nature of the subject matter, whether that be on the characters or the actual story. I’m mainly influenced by real life stories that have happened to myself, inspiring me to create light hearted takes on my own experiences. I’m also influenced by comics, music, animations, interesting people and general unusual subject matter. My favourite artists include illustrators like Dan Berry, Oliver Jeffers, Warwick Johnson Cadwell, Gipi, Jeffrey Brown and Chris Riddell.’

‘From as early as I can remember, the only thing I ever wanted to do was draw. After studying Fine Art at school, and choosing to do an Art Foundation degree, I realised illustration was the right path for me, and decided to do an Illustration degree at the University of Gloucestershire. This proved to be the right decision for me personally, as it helped me discover my own particular style of working. It also helped my ability to develop narrative structures and character design. I also joined other illustrators from my class to form a collective known as ‘The Whatnot Tree‘. As a group, we travel up and down the country going to different comic conventions, art fairs and creative events selling our work.’

‘Currently based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, whilst continuing freelance commissions, I am in the process of designing a new comic based on my personal experiences of living with inflammatory bowel disease. I hope with this, I can provide a light hearted take on something which can be quite unpleasant to live with; whilst making it relate to people with the condition and educating those who may not be aware of the condition. Having already produced two before, I am also continuing to develop comics based on my experiences whilst working part time at a local library. These deal with either amusing situations or customers I’ve had to deal with and presenting them in a light hearted manner. I am also In the process of starting work on illustrating a children’s book with a local writer.’
