‘I am a Surface Pattern Designer with a passion for creating intricate hand drawings and designs. Focusing on different textures and details to create life like sketches I base my work around wildlife and its surrounding environment, trying to capture the essence and personality of each individual creature. I have always had a love of nature therefore it is the main inspiration behind the works I create. Firstly I sketch all of the different aspects separately to create a large portfolio of drawings to work with. I then scan them and create the final design using Photoshop. I enjoy using Photoshop as it gives me the freedom to play around with my drawings much more and be experimental when it comes to composition. I take my inspiration from many different places, when I find a pattern design or illustration I like I pin it up in my studio, therefor I am always surrounded with inspiration.
Having had an interest in art from a young age I spent five years studying Art and Design at Leeds College of Art and graduated in 2012 with a BA (Hons) in Printed Textile and Surface Pattern Design. Whilst at university I spent lots of my time experimenting with different medias, methods of mark making and printing. I do enjoy experimentation with media but have always been drawn back to the detail you can achieve using pen and pencil. Some of my designs do feature some aspects of pressed flowers, dye and ink mark making to create different textures and details but the main aspects are always pencil.’
‘Based in Leeds I now have a collection of Limited Edition Prints and products ranging from greetings cards to cushions. I am currently working on a new collection based around British Florals and also working on a commissions basis for the individual looking for a more personal design. Trying to promote myself and my work I am taking part in art fairs, exhibitions and competitions throughout Yorkshire and stocking small independent shops. In doing this I have recently been awarded a certificate of ‘Outstanding Art’ from the online gallery ‘Light, Space and Time’ and was awarded 2nd place in an arts competition held in Leeds. My hope for the next few years is to take part in trade fairs, build my client base and hopefully expand my product range.’
