Final Year Illustration Student Jade Laura

Jade Laura is an illustrator from Merseyside, currently in the third year of her degree at UCLAN in Preston.

‘I use many mediums throughout my work but I predominantly use paper cutting as my way of drawing as it allows me to draw with a precise, clear line, and I then colour the images digitally.

I think it’s important to enjoy the work that you create, personally I take pleasure in the physicality and the labour of the making process behind the paper cut images and it satisfies me knowing the patience that has gone into producing them. I take inspiration from contemporary illustrators that create a lot of character design within their work such as Kate Sutton and Donna Wilson. My work is mainly inspired by animals, portraiture and real life situations, these topics lead me into producing character designs that I then convert into jewellery, books, toys, and printed goods.’

‘I’m currently producing work for the Preston Illustrate exhibition, where I will be showcasing projects from the past year, including work for the YCN bear cereal box brief, for which I produced back of pack designs aimed at children, the images can be cut out from the box to create a woodland scene for the children to play with. The exhibition will also include the year book project that I am currently working on, which will contain paper cut portraits of all of my peers and tutors a long with information and interactive pages, I’m planning to expand on these projects, and others, and continue experimenting with character design and craft after I graduate.’
