‘The project is basically a follow on from last year, I love football, and I love the World Cup. Most illustrators I follow have been doing work based around the tournament, and even though I’d already
completed several A-Zs, I just felt there was one more in me. Who knows, maybe more.
The project last year was a big thing for me as it really got people interested in my work, and coming from a Fine Arts background, and switching to graphics, that was big. This year I’ve tried to improve the drawings. Spend a little longer on each one, really study the players face and try to pick out the key features. Basic illustrating really. I’ve also tried to improve the colours.’
‘Picking the players has been tough. There are 32 teams in the tournament, and only 26 letters in the alphabet, so I’ve had to miss out the odd team out. But it’s the players that are hard to pick. I asked my instagram followers at the beginning of the tournament to try and help me pick the players which they did. I then had to write down an idea of what I was going to do.
That list has changed time and time again. Players haven’t performed, players have performed, and then done something silly, so I’ve had to change it. I even drew Fred for Brazil, watched him that night, and decided to draw someone else. The drawings are meant to be the stars of the World Cup. For me, Fred hasn’t done enough.
All in all, it’s just a bit of fun. I illustrate on the side, and I enjoy sharing my work. These A-Z projects are a big help for me as it gives me something to strive towards, and plenty of practise. When people take an interest, it’s a big bonus.’
