Freelance Illustrator Sophie Burrows

Sophie Burrows is a freelance illustrator living and working in Bristol. She graduated from the University of the West of England in 2011.

‘Since graduating, I’ve worked on projects in the Children’s Publishing and Greetings Card industries. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing clients such as HarperCollins, Parragon Books and American Greetings. Earlier this year I got the chance to work on a kids’ fiction title for Barrington Stoke, doing black and white internal illustrations. As I usually work in such bright colours, it was great to be working within different parameters and it encouraged me to be more inventive and create some work I was really pleased with!

I’m always drawn to work that I feel is really vibrant and expressive- as soon as I saw Yasmeen Ismail’s book ‘Time for Bed Fred’ I fell in love with her work, and I adore the work of Emily Hughes. I’m also massively influenced by illustrators I loved as a child- Nick Sharratt is a favourite of mine. I spend a lot of time in bookshops just pouring over children’s books, getting inspired. Its such a calm environment and so easy to get lost for hours!’

‘I’m currently working on a children’s book for Emirati publishers Kalimat Publishing. This will be my fourth book with them, they’re really great to work with as they give me a lot of freedom with the design process. Its always a great challenge too as the books read right to left, so I’m always trying to think of compositions with this in mind, and the culture is very different to my own. They keep me on my toes!’
