Nicola Elks is a designer and maker creating artwork and products based on origami and triangles. She graduated from the University of Huddersfield last July in Textile Crafts, gaining an upper second degree. Nicola has already exhibited at the Huddersfield degree show and The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham last year, and will be exhibiting her work at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate in April.
‘The original collection is called FlexiFold; a design concept created for interior spaces. The aim was to create a multi-sensory experience with textiles, engaging people to use both sight and touch simultaneously. With an interesting structure, the FlexiFold fabrics can move and be manipulated to take on new forms and shapes. The pieces move with ease, going from fully stretched to completely folded in seconds.
FlexiFold is based on the art of origami, where the techniques used in paper folding have been translated to fabrics, creating amazing new pieces. Tessellated triangles are also featured, which are stitched in a way that allows the fabric to fold in a variety of different directions.’
‘I am currently developing my ‘FlexiFold Textiles By Nicola Elks’ business, creating new and exciting products ready for BCTF (British Craft Trade Fair) in April. My created fabrics are being explored further, whilst I am also developing a new collection that creates images using multiple triangles. I am really enjoying working on my products, exploring what exciting things I can create. I love trying out new things and watching as I take an idea and bring it to life. I can’t wait to take my new products to BCTF and other fairs this year for people to see and enjoy.’
