Freelance Illustrator Maddy Burrows

Maddy Burrows won a D&AD New Blood award for her short story ‘Bucket’, she is a graduate of the Leeds College of Art (& Dundee) and now works as a freelance illustrator.

‘My favourite illustrators have, metaphorically speaking, followed me throughout my childhood and unapologetically entered into my adult life. And now, at the start of my career, I still feel a strong loyalty to those that have inspired me and (although sadly I have never met them) pushed me forward, among which are Tove Jansson, Wolf Erlbruch, and Judith Kerr.’

‘I grew up in the city of York with my cats and little sister, after moving there from London when I was small. In 2011 I completed my foundation in art and design at Leeds College of Art, before moving to Dundee (and leaving my cat, Gwendolyn behind!) to take a Bachelor of Arts degree in Illustration. I graduated with honours in June 2014, and then moved to Glasgow with my partner, and got a ragdoll kitten called Moomin (who is constantly eating my work).

Since graduating, I have won a D&AD New Blood award for my short story ‘Bucket’. I have also been writing and mocking up picture books and sending them off to publishers, as well as completing freelance projects. Aside from my favourite authors and illustrators, I also find inspiration in cats, hot drinks and the ever-changing weather conditions of the British Isles.’
