Sarah Ryan is an artist based in Philadelphia, fueled by ice cream, imagination and inspired by comic books, vintage advertisements and fairy tales.
‘My favorite tools are mechanical pencils and watercolor, and my work usually features animals, elements of fantasy, and a healthy amount of humor. I have been creating archival prints, notecards, and accessories from my original illustrations under the brand “Sarah Draws Things” since 2012.
In addition to drawing and painting, I work in a childrens library; there is a constant flood of inspiration there. I borrow heavily from the work of Victorian artists during the Golden Age of Illustration, especially Ivan Bilibin and Edmund Dulac. I’m also a HUGE fan of Beatrix Potter. I love lots and lots of details, and creating soft textures with pencils. I originally thought I would be a biologist; my love of sciences has greatly impacted my work… I can’t seem to get away from drawing plants and animals!’
‘In the coming year I will be creating work influenced by and set in the city of Philadelphia for The Art Dept. gallery. I love to take everyday settings, like my home city, and make them magical, or incorporate unexpected color choices.’
