Natalie Williamson is another designer who is heading off to the New York trade show, SURTEX in May. A University of Huddersfield Graphic Design student she is currently doing an Enterprise Placement Year which allows her to run my own business for the year instead of undertaking a conventional work placement. Over the year she has been running her own Surface Pattern and Graphic Design business whilst also manufacturing smaller items of stationery and homeware to sell online.
‘I work mostly from my home studio in the UK, often accompanied by my 3 year old daughter, Ava and sausage dog, Poppy. Both like to join me in making a creative mess! Working traditionally to begin with, I take my illustrations into digital form. My aim is to keep my hand drawn graphic style and combine this with my love of lush colour to design happy surface patterns, for happy people. As the show fast approaches my routine is Eat, sleep, design, tweet, repeat!’
‘My background is in Retail, Marketing and online PR but I decided to return to uni after my daughter was born and I had a positive response to bespoke invitation designs I started to put up for sale on eBay. I chose a BA Hons degree in graphic design which has formed a strong basis for all forms of design work I do. I fell in love with the endless possibilities of surface pattern design following a visit to Printsource. Since the trip to New York, I have taken a few popular online art and surface pattern design courses, which have been a fantastic experience and a wonderful way to stretch myself, learn masses and network with other designers.’
